JOHN BURRELL MSAI

Illustrator

JOHN BURRELL is an award-winning architect and illustrator with a recognised track record of architectural representation. This includes sketch and concept design, through to planning and completion. The emphasis is on conveying the built reality of architectural interventions, and the quality of places created to accurately convey designers’ and promoters’ aspirations.

He also serves on many National and International Amenity organisations and design panels. This added experience of design evaluation and judgment can be brought to specific commissions when necessary.

His highly acclaimed, effective visualisations have played a significant role for projects on key sites within significant city contexts. Commissions include drawings for competition bids, high profile planning submissions, for heritage sites, and alternative proposals for National amenity organisations and for use in community consultations and campaigns. His output is characterised by the use of evocative imagery and apt scene setting, and it has successfully helped planners, clients and users to understand and promote their architectural aspirations and ultimately to successfully realise their goals.

Predominantly, using a hard-line technique with added colour his drawings can capture the essence design development and how conceptions respond to site context, aiding client confidence in the ongoing design process. Illustrations can be rapid, exploratory, and ‘immediate’ or larger, more considered and finished when more detailed final drawings are called for. He is also able to offer colour pencil, mixed media and pastel renderings.

He operates from a studio base in London and France and has links and is a regular visitor to North America.
