Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey

One of the most impressive surviving buildings of the Roman Empire, reconstructed and partially restored in 1904 after earthquake damage over many years. Its original function was a repository for over 12,000 scrolls and parchments. It represents a centre of learning for early Christian scholarship during the reign of the Roman Empire.
