Mayfair

Line and Wash | Watercolour

One of the most interesting buildings in London. This beautiful ornate church was built around 1890in Mayfair. ‘Christ the scientist’ was established in the U.S. and became very popular over this side of the pond as well. This led to this huge church which was really a concert hall at the back with an ornate front.

The scientist bit refers to Christ as a healer and the churches followers shunned medical advice for prayer. Obviously this didn’t work too well and the authorities soon clamped down on it. It then predictably fell out of favour and as congregations shrunk the concert bit was demolished.

If you pass through the doors now you will find a 1980’s office block and garden! Very odd and free to peak.
